Wood Surfboards

by James L. Ward III

Wooden Surfboard

“Tripp Sticks Boardworks represents my quest to capture, via wood’s inherent beauty, the art form and function unique to surfboard

design. Each board is meticulously crafted by my hands,

working from my original designs, using hand selected

lumber. It is my desire that my work speaks well

of my love for the craft and my reverence for

wood in ways that will inspire pride of

ownership for generations to come.”

DEDICATION

To... CAROL EARNSHAW, the love of my life. Carol was there for me with steadfast encouragement, love and support, from day-one of my quest to build the boards (2007), until the day she passed on, June 15, 2023. Carol is forever in my heart, Spirit, and by my side. We shall one day be together again.
To... Mom and Dad - Jim & Doris, for moving  us to California in '59.   To Dad - for teaching me woodworking and bodysurfing.   To Mom and Dad - for their examples of devotion to and love of family, and our Creator, now in Eternity.

My pursuit of my art today is not possible without the ongoing support of:
Dr. Gail Anderson, Roger Nance, Rob Driscoll, Kirk Richardson, Jonny Nance,
and that of my four amazing children, Laurel, James IV, Dustin, and Loni.   Much Love and gratitude to all.

COLLECTOR CLASSIC COLLABORATIONS

I am forever grateful to Shaun Tomson.

Upon showing TrippSticks #1 to Shaun in 2009 he immediately introduced me to Reynolds Yater.

This intro led Mr. Yater to invite me to produce (3) Yater Spoons using my wood artistry.

While collaborating with Mr. Yater, I had the extended good fortune to meet Gerry Lopez. I was subsequently encouraged and licensed by Gerry to produce my wood version of his iconic Lightning Bolt.

Shaun also played the key role in introducing me to Mark Richards which secured the license agreement to produce the M.R. Twin Fin in wood.

It is an absolute thrill and honor for me to be able to work with these Hall of Fame giants and be given the chance to interpret these iconic legendary surfboard designs using my wood artistry.

Thank you so much, Shaun Tomson, for believing in me, praising my work, and introducing me to these living legends of the surf world, which lead to opportunities I could have only dreamed of without your support.

With the blessings and insights provided by Gerry Lopez, it was my
honor and privilege to create my wood version of the iconic
Lightning Bolt.
The result is this unique interpretation using the original 8’0” Pintail
Bolt specifications that Gerry designed, shaped and rode to
legendary prominence as “Mr. Pipeline” on the North Shore and
beyond.
This striking example of legendary surfboard form, function and
beauty fused with woodworking artistry is signed by both myself
and Gerry Lopez.

Reynolds Renny Yater Spoons Wooden Surfboard

The Yater Spoons

First designed and introduced by Reynolds Yater in the mid 1960’s
the Yater Spoon is like no other longboard before or since. Of
particular note - the subtle complexities of the deck and rails of the
famous Spoon make it the most difficult board I have ever had the
honor to interpret using my wood techniques. As with all the
Collaborative boards I am licensed to create, each of these Spoons
bare the signatures of both Mr. Yater and myself.

About the Artist

Artist Statement

It is good to be able to honor a heritage bestowed upon me by my Father and Grandfather - they were the first to introduce me to the woodworkers’ art as a boy in the 1950’s. My reverence for wood, combined with my love, respect and awe of the Ocean, would finally find a way for me to pursue a lifelong dream - to express with natural wood the inspiration and awe that the sculptured lines of the Surfboard have always held for me. I approach the creation of each surfboard with the hope that the design elements employed will allow the wood’s inherent beauty to speak for itself, speak well, and capture the eye of a diverse audience.

Crafting Wooden Surfboard Vintage

Biography

At the age of 11, I was plucked from my birthplace, Iowa, The Heartland. California became my family’s new home and where I and my family first experienced a taste of the Pacific shores’ salt water, Sun, waves, and the luxurious feeling of warm sand between my toes. I was soon hooked on surfing at a time when venturing into the California surf meant having strength and confidence enough to go without leash or wetsuit. After the early years of lessons learned body surfing, and mat surfing in Laguna Beach I would find my way to The Wedge, Dana Pt., Thousand Steps, Rincon, and Sand Dollar, plus dozens more breaks in between. Although I pushed limits in those early years, realizing I would never be the best surfer in the water instilled in me a lifelong respect for the Ocean and for the surfers whose talents far surpassed my own. Fifty years later I turned a lifelong dream into reality - I began hand building fine collector wood surfboards as my personal testimony to the craft, and to the greatness of original surfboard designers, shapers, and surfers. TrippSticks Boardworks was founded in 2008. The encouragement of family and friends, as well as direct mentoring from Shaun Tomson, Reynolds Yater, Gerry Lopez, Mark Richards, Bob ‘The Greek’ Bolen, Roger Nance, Scott Murray, Steve McKibben, Kevin Ancell, and many others, has emboldened my quest to find my personal style and unique artistic expression. I am grateful to all - customers, mentors, loved ones, and God, for encouraging and supporting my need to do this art, and how my work has found its way onto the walls of proud collectors from Michigan to Montana, California to Colorado, Texas to Hawaii.

Aloha Nui Loa and Mahalo,
James Ward

Jim is a proud Father of (4), Grandad to (10).

U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran (1970-76).

Grateful to God, and to all who support his work.

Fiberglassing

Fiberglassing surfboards is an art in and of itself. Having a serious allergy to the materials used in the fiberglassing process I must contract with professional fiberglassers to put their finishing touch on my boards. The best Fiberglassers are few and far between. Brad Kavonius of El Brado's Fiberglassing, Camas, Washington, is my "Glasser" and he's the Best. Much honor, respect, and appreciation to Brad for his fantastic work on my boards!

EARTHSHIP

All life is a gift from streams and forests.

Land and Sea do not belong to us.

We belong to this Land, our Mother Earth

     Fueled within by magma flame

Her charms provoke our manic reflex.

Daring from every mountain top to touch the Heavens.

Graceful fingertips gliding across liquid glass, wall of Ocean’s swell.

Untethered soaring, climbing, racing, chasing -

Perchance to grasp the ancient message

           Carried upon wind and waves.

Life is a gift from streams and forests.

Land and Sea do not belong to us.

               We belong to Mother Earth.

Her forces never to be tamed by humankind.

We trip the light fantastic, mirrored visions splendor.

Our noble quests in vain to mimic Heaven’s grandeur.

Consumed in Moonglow, bathed by Sunbeams’ radiance.

Gather in this fleeting, privileged moment’s pause to

Listen … become the ancient message.

                       Reverence with Joy.
